Section B: Texts and Analysis
By now, you should have at least one text that you have selected for analysis. You should analyse these texts using your deconstruction skills and knowledge of theory.
One thing you should be looking for is the ideology present within your text(s).
Ideology: The beliefs and values found in a text – the ideas behind it.
How do you find the ideology? Read on!
Find the worksheet in the shared area (Media Studies->A2->MS3->MS3 Ideology Task) and work through the tasks below:
1. http://www.mediaknowall.com/as_alevel/alevkeyconcepts/alevelkeycon.php?pageID=ideology
Revise ideology and preferred readings by visiting the above website.
2. Look for the dominant ideology present in your texts: whose world view is represented?
This is more difficult to answer than you might think! To help you do so, collect information on the creators of your text(s).
This might include writers, directors, film or TV studios, journalists, companies etc. Try to gather as much information as you can about gender, age, nationality etc.
Is there anything about these creators that might affect the beliefs in their texts?
3. Update your blog with your findings and ideas about the creators of your texts.
For future lessons:
4. When you have gathered as much information as you can, and have decided what you might expect to find in your texts, you can use it to help you analyse them.
You should also, at this point, consider which group(s) and their associated world view(s) have not been represented in your texts. Why do you think they are absent?
5. Using your above research/findings, answer the following question: what possible readings exist of your text? What do you think is the dominant/preferred reading?
